Prep time: 3 hours
Yield: 2 loaves
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Stir in brown sugar, salt, shortening, remaining warm water, and 2 1/2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Mix enough flour to handle.
Turn onto lightly floured board and knead about 10 minutes, adding remaining flour.
Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up. Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
Punch dough down and divide in half. Roll into two rectangles, press ends to seal. Put in two loaf pans greased sides up. Let rise 1 hour.
Place on low oven rack in center of oven. Do not let pans touch. Bake at 375š about 45 minutes until brown. Remove from pans and brush with soft butter.
